Dudley Zoo staff recycled tonnes of scrap metal during their participation in last week's "National Go Green Week".  Three loads of scrap were removed as the team also recycled paper, printer toners and cartridges.

The material was "gathered up from across the 40 acre Castle Hill Site" said grateful Zoo manager Matt Lewis.

Monies raised were spent on extra treats for their animal residents!

Neil Woodall Commercial Manager at Mason Metals hopes the publicity the Zoo has created will encourage people to continue to recycle "due to metal prices being low at present people maybe more reluctant to recycle properly and instances of fly tipping across the Black Country have increased.  The Zoo has proved you can recycle metal profitably.  It served their dual purpose of cleaning  up and recycling - and still yielded some monetary value."

In 2014/15 820 instances of fly tipping cost Dudley Council £45,000.  Nationally fly tipping is up by 25% with 825,000 reported incidents.

Mr Woodall urged residents and businesses to use authorised waste carriers, council collections & Civic Amenities sites to dispose of waste responsibly "these facilities are available to recycle properly and keep our local areas clean and tidy."
