Payments
Selling Scrap Metal: Legal Requirements and Easy Payment Options at Mason Metals
As of December 2012, paying for scrap metal with cash is illegal. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 further mandates that sellers must provide photographic ID, along with proof of address in certain cases.
To sell scrap metal, you need either a valid photo-card driving licence (with your current address) or a UK passport accompanied by a recent bank statement, utility bill, or council tax demand (no older than 3 months).
While this may seem inconvenient, Mason Metals has streamlined the process with a state-of-the-art computer system that securely records your ID and payment details for future transactions. Returning customers who provide valid ID and bank details are paid via same-day BACS transfer, ensuring a fast and hassle-free experience.
At Mason Metals, all payments are commission-free—whether by same-day BACS transfer or cheque. Our membership cards allow for quick retrieval of your details, though all customers can be easily found in our secure database of over 11,000 suppliers. We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office to protect your personal data.
Our focus is to weigh, pay, and get you back on the road quickly and efficiently. You’ll receive a Waste Transfer Note (fulfilling your legal Duty of Care) which also serves as your payment receipt. With same-day BACS payments, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your money is on the way.
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act also requires all dealers to be licensed, with licences displayed prominently on premises or vehicles. Dealers must keep detailed records of all metal transactions, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
